SEO Code of Ethics
Our commitment to transparent, honest, and effective search engine optimisation.
The discussion of any SEO Code of Ethics is like a discussion on politics or religion: there are more than two sides, all sides are strongly opinionated, and seldom do they choose the same path to the same end.
Most Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) practitioners understand these ethics, yet not all practitioners practice safe SEO. Too many SEO practitioners claim a bias towards surfers, or the search engines, or their clients — all are appropriate in the correct balance — and it is common for the "whatever it takes" excuse to bend some of these ethics to fit their needs.
This page does not pass judgment. It simply states the obvious: ethical SEO is better for everyone — search engines, businesses, and customers alike.

Frequently Asked Questions
Black hat SEO refers to practices that violate search engine guidelines in an attempt to manipulate rankings. These include keyword stuffing, cloaking, link schemes, and hidden text.
Why avoid black hat SEO:
- Risk of penalties: Google can manually or algorithmically penalise your site, removing it from search results entirely
- Short-term gains, long-term pain: Any ranking improvements are typically temporary and followed by severe drops
- Reputation damage: Being associated with manipulative practices harms your brand's credibility
- Wasted investment: Recovering from a penalty often costs more than doing SEO right the first time
Our code of ethics explicitly prohibits any tactics that violate search engine rules.
White hat SEO follows search engine guidelines and focuses on providing value to users. Tactics include quality content creation, proper keyword research, ethical link building, and improving user experience.
Grey hat SEO falls in a murky middle ground — tactics that aren't explicitly forbidden but may be considered manipulative or risky. Examples include buying expired domains, using private blog networks, or aggressive link building.
Our commitment:
- We practice white hat SEO exclusively
- We don't use tactics that could potentially harm client sites
- We prioritise long-term, sustainable results over quick fixes
- We are transparent with clients about our methods
No ethical SEO professional can guarantee #1 rankings. Google's algorithms consider hundreds of factors, many of which are outside any practitioner's control — including competitor actions, algorithm updates, and changing user behaviour.
Our code of ethics explicitly states: "No SEO practitioner will set unreasonable client expectations. This includes implying that results can be obtained in an unreasonable amount of time given the known condition of the search engines, client site, and competition."
What we can guarantee:
- We will follow best practices and search engine guidelines
- We will be transparent about our methods and progress
- We will work diligently to improve your rankings
- We will never use tactics that put your site at risk
Our code of ethics requires that "No SEO practitioner will participate in a conflict of interest without prior notice to all parties involved."
Our approach:
- Transparency first: We disclose any potential conflicts to all affected clients
- Equal effort: All clients receive our best effort regardless of size or budget
- Separate strategies: We develop unique strategies for each client based on their specific goals and market position
- No favouritism: We never prioritise one client over another for personal gain
If a direct conflict cannot be resolved transparently, we will refer one client to another trusted provider rather than compromise our ethical standards.
If you suspect a previous or current SEO provider is using unethical (black hat) tactics on your website:
- Stop all work with that provider immediately — remove their access to your site
- Conduct a thorough SEO audit to identify problematic tactics (unusual backlinks, hidden text, cloaking)
- Submit a reconsideration request to Google if your site has been penalised
- Clean up the issues — remove spammy backlinks, fix hidden content, etc.
- Contact us for a free consultation — we can assess the damage and create a recovery plan
Our ethical approach means we never use tactics that could harm your site. We're happy to audit your existing SEO and provide honest, transparent advice about any issues we find.
